IMPORTANT NOTE: This course does not encourage students to evaluate their bodies based on weight, shape, or size. We do not address weight loss. The focus is on knowledge, health-promoting behaviors, and a positive attitude toward and relationship with food.
Health is much more than simply the absence of disease consisting of multiple facets, each of which has a powerful impact on the others. This lesson covers these facets and the impact they each have on our overall health and wellbeing.
This lesson provides an overview of metabolism and the energy system of the body. Rather than diving deep into the vast complexities, students gain a fundamental understanding of the concepts that apply to everyday life.
This overview of the digestive system helps students understand how the food we consume nourishes and becomes fuel for our bodies.
Students will learn how hormones play a special role in various key functions of the body including storage of energy, appetite control, and mood.
In this key lesson, students learn how the food we consume and the energy we expend impact the growth, performance, and overall health of our bodies.
This lesson addresses the importance of adequate protein intake, how much, and how often should we be eating it. Students also begin to learn what foods are good sources of protein and how to include them in their diet.
This lesson covers the importance of dietary fat for overall health. Students also continue on from the previous lesson to look at a variety of foods that contain healthy, good quality fats.
This lesson helps students understand the importance and function of carbohydrates to fuel our brains and physical activity. Due to the often controversial nature of this topic in society today, parents can be assured that the course takes a very balanced approach when it comes to the topic of carbohydrates.
This lesson covers the importance of the little details of the food we eat and the important role it plays in the overall health of our bodies. Students also continue to look into a variety of foods and learn where they can find the most nutrient-dense sources of nutrition.

This lesson provides practical tips and ways of planning and structuring meals and snacks to provide enjoyment, nutrition, and adequate energy. The core nutrition concepts regarding energy balance, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and micronutrients are put into practice.

This lesson addresses the importance of hydration and how to stay properly hydrated depending on their level of physical activity, environmental temperature, etc.
This lesson addresses the importance of being physically active and various ways they can incorporate activity and exercise into their lives to set them up for a lifetime of health and enjoyment. The focus is on exercise for enjoyment and the practical benefits to staying physically active.
This important lesson helps students understand that food is much more than fuel for our bodies. Students will understand the important role it plays with regard to health but also its powerful role in our social and emotional lives.

This lesson helps students to understand and become aware of their appetite, satiety, and hunger cues. Building on the fundamentals from previous lessons, students dive deeper into topics including listening to our body’s signals, how food choices can impact the amount of food we consume, and the importance of developing this skill for maintaining a healthy body. Students also begin to explore our “food environment” and media influence with regard to food choices and the total amount of food we consume.

The goal of this lesson is to  help students to understand how to apply what they’ve learned in developing a positive body image. Students will also explore how the media, their peers, and culture influence and shape the ways in which we view our own bodies as well as those around us.

This lesson helps students understand the key habits and healthy behaviors we can begin to implement that will set us up for long term success going into adulthood. This lesson is somewhat of a capstone for the course and students will be encouraged to spend some time considering specific habits and behaviors that they can begin to work on that may improve their overall health.

Frequently asked questions

Once enrolled, you’ll find 2 versions of the course. The “Kids” version is aimed at kids in the 8-11 year old range while the “Teens” version is aimed at those 12 and up. Both courses cover the same core content so both your younger and older children will be learning the same basic content.

The private social community for the kids and teens consists of a Facebook-like area on the Hope Drives Me website. There is a separate group for each age group. All interactions are completely anonymous (no real names are exposed). There is no direct messaging feature so all conversations are public to the community. This network is completely private and only accessible to paid members of the Equipped to Thrive™ program. Being 100% under my control, each post and comment is read and monitored by myself or a moderator to ensure it is appropriate. I have also developed a profanity filter that filters out just about any profanity imaginable should a child or teen slip up. While 100% perfection is not possible, every possible safeguard is in place to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and uplifting experience. Finally, participation is 100% optional and requires parental consent. In addition, parents are welcome to join the group and observe conversations (please no commenting … save that for the parent group).

This allows me to provide the lowest possible cost with almost no barrier to entry for any family on just about any budget. Also, the ongoing support parents, coaches, and kids/teens receive as members of the program is invaluable for continuing to grow and develop a lifelong healthy lifestyle.

While this course does not encourage weight loss, dieting, food restriction, or attempting to change one’s appearance, it is not intended for those with an eating disorder or those recovering from an eating disorder. If your child has developed some worrisome eating habits, please contact me directly and I would be happy to recommend appropriate action.

I am definitely available to discuss live speaking engagements, seminars, workshops, etc. These can be done in person or via Zoom for your group, church, or organization. I am located in the Dallas, TX area. Please fill out the contact form and we can set up a time to meet over Zoom to discuss what you have in mind.

Jeff put together an excellent course on nutrition & lifestyle for kids and teens! Very informative, structured and straight to the point. Great amount of information is given. Jeff is great at taking something that seems complex and simplifying it. Excellent work!

“Having met Jeff through my nutrition course working along side him for almost 2 years I can safely say he is my go to whenever I need help with anything nutrition or evidence related. Jeff has the ability to just understand science and to relay it to others in an easily digestible format. His knowledge is outstanding and he has an abundance of patience making him absolutely ideal to teach nutrition to children and teens. He is also one of the kindest and most helpful people I’ve met.
